Discovering Your True Identity: Beyond the Street Clothes of Culture
I see each of us like Superman—like Superwoman, really. I see us like Clark Kent, who had a disguise. He had to disguise his supernatural identity in order to fit into his ordinary surroundings. But whenever the world needed him, they would call out to him and he would peel back that disguise to reveal who he really was. And he would show up to save the world.
I feel like the world needs us right now. The world needs us to show up and reveal our true identity. It needs us to peel back those layers of culture and tradition that keep our true identity held back in wraps or held down into bondage.
The Hero Within
As I was preparing this message, I saw the image of a superhero pulling back their street clothes to reveal their true supernatural identity. When I shared this vision, others confirmed they'd seen similar images—like little kids pulling open their shirt to reveal the superhero on the inside.
You are a hero, a heroine in God's master plan. And He needs you to wake up to who you really are. You are a superhero in God's Kingdom on earth with a superpower and a super purpose.
For most of us, that feels like fantasy, right? Just wishful thinking. Because we've lost touch with that authentic self that we were when we were children. For some of us, we weren't even raised in homes where we were allowed to dream as children. When we shove that true identity down, we end up being like those street clothes feel more normal to us than who we really are on the inside.
It's almost like we don't realize as believers that we have the God of the universe living on the inside of us. But the enemy just wants us to believe we're powerless.
The Questions That Matter
So the questions really are: Do you know who you are? And do you know whose you are?
The enemy wants us to have faulty filters. He distorts the truth because he is too weak to overpower us any other way. At the fall, he had no power to shove that forbidden fruit in the original couple's mouth. They had to make agreement with him, even if that agreement came through deception and manipulation.
The fall happened because the original couple lost sight of who they really were. The serpent said, "If you want to be like God, eat this." What was wrong with that? They were already like God. They were made in His image and in His likeness.
The Enemy's Strategy
Satan has no power over us without our human agreement. His tactic from the beginning has always been to divide and conquer, always. And it doesn't matter what we divide over. It could be race, education, gender, where you live, what you believe. Any division will do, because his power has no effect on us without our agreement.
If he can get us to divide, we become powerless against his schemes. This is why evil is so prevalent in the world. It's a report card on the church. It's because the enemy has been brilliant at dividing us, isolating us, convincing us that we are just powerless pawns in this great chess game of life.
But that isn't true. We've been duped. We actually are created to be God's super agents on the earth.
Breaking Free from the Disguise
Most of us have been hiding behind the street clothes of culture and tradition for so long that we've forgotten who we really are underneath. We've confused fitting in with being authentic. We've mistaken keeping peace with keeping truth.
But here's what I've learned: The ordinary daily things of life become supernatural when they're done in love, in connection with Him and in connection with others. You don't need to do something "big" to change the world. You just need to show up authentically as who God created you to be.
What makes you come alive? What makes you happy? What were you actually wired to do? Not what everybody else wants you to do. How we contribute to the whole authentically is actually what makes the whole whole. Otherwise, there's a place missing where we were supposed to show up, but we came looking like someone else because they seemed cooler or our parents liked them better.
Your Superpower Is Authenticity
You are already heroines in God's master plan. If you're fully living from your heart, that's what's absolutely necessary. We need you to show up and be you. We need you to give yourself permission to be you. The world's waiting for you.
Your superpower isn't something you need to develop or earn—it's who you already are when you strip away the disguises. It's your authentic self, connected to God, operating in love, refusing to be divided from others by the enemy's schemes.
The Kingdom of God is like leaven—like yeast that gets into that lump of dough and begins to permeate and transform the whole lump. We are supposed to change the world from the inside out. We were created to be superheroes that saved the world. That's actually our job. It's our mandate.
The reason every great movie ever made—any of the epic movies—always have the "saving the world" theme is because it calls to our very nature, our true nature, the one that we've hidden. We are created to save the world, to conquer the chaos, to defeat evil.
Permission to Be Real
For your heart to carry that kind of superpower, you have to give yourself permission to be the authentic you. Not the version of you that keeps everyone comfortable. Not the you that never rocks the boat. Not the you that hides your gifts because they might make others feel insecure.
The authentic you. The one God created with purpose and passion and power.
Our original assignment hasn't changed. We are to take dominion, but our strategy for dominion cannot follow the worldly pyramid model. It has to be the model of our King for it to be His Kingdom. We come low to lift others up.
The Call to Authenticity
I want you to put your hands on your heart right now. Feel that heartbeat. That's the rhythm of the One who lives inside you. That's the pulse of the superhero that's been hiding under street clothes for too long.
Father God, I'm asking that You would literally put Your hand on top of their hand. Like a defibrillator, Lord, push that love and that energy and that honor into their hearts. Shock that heart back to life again. Stir up that person on the inside of them that You created them to be—to be a love generator in their world.
Help them to discover what makes them truly come alive. Help them to see that being bold and courageous and just showing up and being real—that's what spiritual warfare looks like.
The world is waiting for you to stop hiding. It's time to pull back those street clothes and reveal the superhero God created you to be.
The question isn't whether you have a superpower. The question is: Will you give yourself permission to use it?
Blessings,
Susan 😊
