Unlocking the Healing That’s Already Yours
I woke up in the middle of the night with one phrase repeating in my mind: "Healing is the children's bread."
I knew immediately it was Holy Spirit reminding me of a truth the Church has forgotten—or worse, deliberately set aside.
What We've Lost
Healing is part of our covenant. Healing is part of the promises of God, particularly in the new covenant where Jesus came and bought and paid for our healing. "By His stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5, NKJV).
But often in Christianity—at least modern evangelical Christianity—we hear the word salvation taught as "going to heaven when you die."
Now, it includes that. That's the result of salvation. But the word itself in Greek, sozo, does not just mean "go to heaven when you die."
It actually means deliverance. It means rescue. It means physical healing. It means complete wholeness. It means nothing missing and nothing broken.
That's the children's bread. That's our promises. That's available for us. That's the food, the manna from the Lord.
Where the Phrase Comes From
The phrase "healing is the children's bread" comes from a story in the book of Matthew, Chapter 15—the story of this Canaanite woman who comes to receive healing from the Lord.
Jesus talks about how healing is for the children and it's not for the dogs. And that sounds like He's dishonoring her. But when you dig into the story, you realize it's actually an invitation into a miracle. And it wasn't dishonor on His part at all.
The story itself is actually set in the context of honor. The entire chapter of Matthew 15 is saturated with this theme—honor versus dishonor. And I want to show you how that plays out, because understanding honor as a key to healing will transform how you approach God, how you pray, and how you partner with Him.
What Is Honor, Really?
But first, let's talk about what honor actually is. Because many of us don't even understand it.
Honor is where we value something. Honor is where we esteem something. Honor means that we put faith in it, that we put trust in it.
Honor actually even opens the door to faith because we wouldn't have faith in something that we didn't feel was valuable or worthy.
So honor is our estimation of something as being important and worthy of our time, of our attention, of our heart, of our faith.
The Problem: We Don't Honor Healing
And many folks today do not honor healing as important. They do not honor it as something that Jesus bought and paid for. They don't honor Him as Healer.
In fact, many Christians, many churches teach that the power gifts aren't for today. Healing's not for today. They actually rewrite the gospel, if you will. They take out verses, so to speak—meaning they say that they don't apply today.
For example, "greater signs will follow those who believe" (Mark 16:17). Jesus was doing all these great miracles, healing people individually and in mass healings, and He's saying, "And greater works than these will you do" (John 14:12, NKJV).
But we're like, "No, no, those great works were only for the original church for the first few centuries while God was establishing His church."
As if God only healed for His own purposes. As if He was using these people to establish His church, but wasn't healing them because He had love and compassion on them.
That violates the very nature of what Jesus Himself demonstrated. He'd always say He had compassion on the people and couldn't help but reach out and heal them. He had compassion on the people and He would feed them.
Honor Is a Currency in God's Kingdom
We have to understand that Jesus Himself walked in honor. He walked in compassion. And all through the Old Testament, even, we see God honoring humans, God honoring our institutions, even when He didn't agree with them.
God even honored humanity in the midst of slavery and everything else. Even though He was not pro-slavery, He was actually trying to dismantle slavery by changing the hearts of people so they would no longer want to own others. He even honors humanity.
We have to understand: This is a currency in God's Kingdom. Honor is a currency in God's Kingdom.
And it's how we make the exchange. We honor Jesus as Healer and we're able to tap into that anointing and receive healing. As an intercessor, we're able to stand in the gap. We're able to be a conduit to hold on to Daddy God's hand and hold on to the person who needs healing and watch it flow.
When We Honor Our Traditions More
But too many people honor their tradition more than the Healer. They honor their tradition and what their church teaches rather than the Word of God.
The Word of God says, "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues... they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover" (Mark 16:17-18, NKJV).
And we say, "Well, that's not for today."
It says these signs will follow those who believe, and we believe, right?
But if we go out and we step out and we pray and nobody gets healed, we'll just kind of back off and say, "Well, it must be right. It's not for today because I tried and that didn't work for me."
You're honoring your experience over the Word of God.
Honor matters. Honor opens the door for you, and dishonor, offense, disbelief closes the door. We need to make sure that we're honoring not only the written Word, but honoring its Author—the Healer Himself.
No Pressure to Produce Miracles
Healing happens when we step out and we just say, "Yes, Lord, we honor You as Healer and we're willing to take the risk. We're actually willing to look foolish if necessary."
But we can't in our own works conjure it up. We can't just try hard enough to make it happen. That's not how healing happens. Healing doesn't happen by our own effort.
We can't produce the miracle, but we can believe that it's possible and stand in the gap and stand as a conduit, as a bridge between the Healer and the one who needs healing.
I love healing. It's like Christian recreation at its best, when you get to watch people come underneath the power of the Lord who just loves them. Sometimes there's a manifest feeling for them. And sometimes they just walk away healed without any demonstration of heat or exuberance, but the healing lasts.
And that's what excites me—because God is real and He's very much a Healer, and we need to honor Him that way.
Healing Is Your Manna
Here's what I want you to understand: Healing is the children's bread. It's your manna. It's your daily provision from the Lord.
When I woke up with that phrase repeating in my mind—"healing is the children's bread"—I knew Holy Spirit was reminding me that this isn't a maybe. It isn't "if it's God's will." It isn't something reserved for a select few or for a certain time period in history.
It's covenant. It's promise. It's part of the salvation package that Jesus bought and paid for.
Sozo—salvation—means deliverance, rescue, physical healing, complete wholeness. Nothing missing. Nothing broken.
That's what Jesus died to give you. That's what's on the table.
The Canaanite Woman Got More Than She Asked For
Back to that story in Matthew 15. That Canaanite woman honored Jesus as Lord and as Master, even when it looked like He was rejecting her. Even when He seemed to call her a dog.
She refused to take offense. She refused to dishonor Him. And because of that honor, her daughter was healed instantly.
But here's what's even more amazing: Her breakthrough wasn't just for her family. It was for her whole region.
Right after her daughter was healed, Jesus went to the area around the Sea of Galilee—still in Gentile territory—and great multitudes came to Him. The lame, blind, mute, and many others were laid at His feet, and He healed them. These Gentiles glorified the God of Israel.
Then Jesus had compassion on them because they'd been there for three days with nothing to eat. Sound familiar? Just like the feeding of the 5,000 Jewish families. But this time, Jesus fed 4,000 Gentile families with seven loaves and a few fish.
One woman's honor opened the door for mass miracles.
Your Honor Opens Doors
What if your willingness to honor Jesus as Healer—even when you don't see immediate results—opens the door not just for your own healing, but for your whole region?
What if stepping out in faith, refusing to get offended when things don't look like you expected, refusing to rewrite the Bible to match your experience—what if that creates a breakthrough that goes beyond just you?
Healing is the children's bread. And you're His child.
The question isn't whether He wants to heal. The question is whether you'll honor Him as Healer enough to step out and partner with Him.
Honor is the key. It's the key that unlocks the door to healing, deliverance, and every promise God has for you.
And that key is already in your pocket.
Blessings,
Susan 😊
