When God Uses Fortune Cookies: Recognizing His Voice in Everyday Synchronicities
Just the other day, I watched a friend's eyes become huge saucers as she stared at a fortune cookie message. We were eating at Panda Express after she'd had a counseling session.
"I was just talking with my counselor about how I had to work on having peace of mind," she whispered, looking between me and the little slip of paper. "And the fortune cookie says, 'Working on your peace of mind is a worthy goal.'"
Can God speak through a fortune cookie? He can speak through anything He wants to. After all, He spoke through a donkey once. Why not a fortune cookie to confirm His love and encouragement to a daughter who needed to hear it?
God's Creative Communication
One of the most beautiful aspects of relationship with God is His unlimited creativity in how He communicates. He's not confined to church buildings or quiet times—though He certainly speaks through those too. He can use whatever captures our attention to show us His heart.
My friend's experience was what my little son Ben used to call "a coincidence with a capital G." Even as a child, Ben could recognize when something was more than mere chance. Children are so much more open to God's Kingdom sometimes than adults are. That's why Jesus said we need to receive the Kingdom like a child—curious, open, and believing easily.
Recognizing Divine Orchestration
When we start seeing patterns—the same series of numbers repeatedly, unexpected encounters that seem perfectly timed, or circumstances that line up in ways that feel like more than coincidence—that could be God getting our attention.
Sometimes these moments are what we call "God winks." Little acknowledgments from heaven that He sees us, He's involved in the details of our lives, and He wants us to know He's there.
I remember going to a zoo once and seeing fish painted in the most incredible neon colors—blues with perfect yellow circles around their eyes, as if someone had taken a marker and outlined them. It was so wild, so creative. In that moment, the message I was getting from God was clear: "Look at how much fun I'm having with creation!"
God's not a boring, distant deity. He's creative, joyful, and yes—fun. He enjoys surprising us and showing us new aspects of His personality through the world He's made.
When Passions Become His Voice
God also speaks through our passions and emotions. What makes you cry? What makes you come alive? When you hear about injustice and your heart breaks, that's often God's heart moving you toward involvement. When something really excites you and you feel energized just thinking about it, that might be Him speaking through the way He designed you.
But we have to be careful that those desires are actually sanctified—aligned with God's heart. Sometimes we can really, really want something that isn't His best for us.
Developing Spiritual Eyes
Learning to recognize God's voice in everyday life requires what I call spiritual sensitivity. It's like tuning a radio dial—the more you practice, the clearer the signal becomes.
The question isn't whether God can speak through unusual means—of course He can. The question is whether we're paying attention and whether we're willing to hear Him in the ordinary moments of our everyday lives.
Living with Open Hearts
What would change in your life if you truly believed that God is actively communicating His love, guidance, and encouragement throughout your day? What if you started looking for His fingerprints in the ordinary moments?
Maybe you'd start having more conversations with Him. Maybe you'd feel less alone. Maybe you'd discover that the God of the universe is far more personal, creative, and involved in your life than you ever imagined.
So here's my challenge: for the next week, pay attention. Ask "Is that You, Lord?" when something seems like more than coincidence. Thank Him for the small wonders. Look for His creativity in creation.
You might just discover that the God who spoke through a burning bush is still speaking today—and He's far more creative in His communication than we ever dared to imagine.
If you want to dive deeper into recognizing God's voice in everyday life, I explore these concepts much more thoroughly in my course "Honoring God's Voice."
But honestly, just starting to pay attention to the "coincidences with a capital G" will begin opening your eyes to how actively involved God is in your daily life.
Blessings,
