Why I Used to Think Hearing God Was Complicated (Spoiler: It's Not)
For years, I waited for the burning bush moment. You know the one—where God's voice thunders from heaven with unmistakable clarity, leaving no doubt about what He's saying. I thought real communication with God had to be dramatic, supernatural, and frankly, nothing like my ordinary life.
I was so wrong.
The truth hit me during a prophetic training course when I realized God had been speaking to me all along. Those spontaneous thoughts that popped into my mind? The random images that flashed through my imagination? The gentle nudges I felt during quiet moments? That was Him. I'd been dismissing His voice because it sounded too much like... me.
The Myth We've Bought Into
Somewhere along the way, we've convinced ourselves that hearing God's voice requires special spiritual credentials or dramatic encounters. We've made it complicated when Jesus made it simple. We've created barriers where God created access.
But here's what I've discovered: the same God who spoke the universe into existence chooses to whisper into our everyday moments. The King of kings doesn't need to shout to get our attention—He just needs us to stop drowning Him out with our busyness and expectations.
When Silence Isn't Really Silence
The biggest revelation for me wasn't learning how to hear God's voice—it was recognizing that I'd been hearing it all along. We live in a world of constant noise: radio in the car, TV at home, phones buzzing, minds racing. No wonder we miss His gentle communications.
But when I started creating moments of stillness, fixing my eyes on Jesus, paying attention to spontaneous thoughts, and writing down what I sensed, everything changed. God wasn't distant or silent. He was right there, speaking in the natural flow of my thoughts and imagination.
It Really Is This Simple
Jesus said His sheep know His voice. Not that they'll eventually learn it after years of seminary training, but that they already know it. There's something in us that recognizes our Creator's voice when we tune in to the right frequency.
The process is surprisingly natural:
Get still enough to hear
Look for Jesus in your imagination
Notice those spontaneous thoughts and feelings
Honor what you receive by writing it down
No fireworks required. No special anointing needed. Just a heart that says, "Yes, Lord, I want to hear You."
The Freedom of Ordinary Communication
When I stopped waiting for the spectacular and started honoring the simple, my relationship with God transformed. Prayer became conversation. Decisions became partnerships. Problems became opportunities to ask, "What do You see here, Lord?"
The God of the universe wants to chat with you about your day, your struggles, your dreams. He's not too important to care about the small stuff—He's too loving not to be involved in every detail.
If you've been striving to hear God's voice, I have good news: you can stop trying so hard. He's already speaking. You just need to recognize what His voice sounds like in your unique relationship with Him.
Want to dive deeper into recognizing God's voice in your everyday life? My course "Honoring God's Voice" walks through practical steps to develop this beautiful conversation with your Creator.
