Listener — “Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like. (James 1:22-24, MSG)

How many times do we listen to someone teach and then forget what we heard within days or even hours. Someone shared a story recently where they got confused listening to a speaker, so they went up after to ask what they meant. And the speaker couldn’t even explain it. It’s a sad world we live in where we spend hours listening but never learn.

So how do we retrain ourselves to learn when we listen? James goes on to tell us to apply what we have heard by being doers and not just hearers only. He says that our hearing brings faith. So if we add faith and works together, we have the strategy for how we can change the world. If we separate the two, we end up with nothing! “Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.”(James 2:26, NLT)

Listening and doing produce fruit that is worth enjoying and sharing with others!

Today’s Decrees:

  • I declare that I am not just a hearer of the Word, but a doer, putting into action everything Daddy God speaks to me!

  • I refuse to let the Word go in one ear and out the other — I retain it by acting on it!

  • My faith and my works move together, like breath moving through a living body!

  • What I hear produces fruit in my life that I can enjoy and share generously with others!

  • I do not deceive myself into thinking that listening alone is enough — I am transformed because I act on what I hear!

Let’s Pray:

Daddy God, forgive us for the times we have listened and walked away unchanged, like glancing in a mirror and forgetting what we saw within moments. Teach us to be doers of Your Word, not hearers only. Let our faith and our works breathe together, alive and inseparable, so that what we believe is proven true by what we do. Help us retain what You speak to us, not through better memory, but through immediate obedience. Let the fruit of our listening and doing be something worth enjoying ourselves and worth sharing generously with everyone around us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Be a Blessing,

Sir Gregory
