Motives— “I don’t have to remind you to what extreme extents we were prepared to go in our efforts to bring you God’s gospel at no expense to you at all. We kept going night and day, both teaching you as well as actively trading in the marketplace. We behaved with utmost integrity and courtesy; making absolutely sure that we gave no offence to disappoint your faith. We have noting to hide. God knows we had no ulterior motives. Just like a father would instruct his children, so we engaged ourselves with you to remind you of your origin in God, inspiring you to live in the daily awareness of your true value and identity. In God’s opinion you are royalty.” (1 Thessalians 2:9-12, The Mirror Bible)
We live in a world that is full of hidden motives and agendas. Paul clearly states what his motive is: no hiddenness! Every day we are inundated with advertisements that have hidden motives or false promises. They come in the form of emails, podcasts, or ads on social media. They are everywhere, even at gas station pumps, billboards, text messages. No one is immune, and a lot of these are pure scams.
The sad thing is it’s even crept into politics and pulpits —the very institutions that are suppose to have are best interest at hand! Sadly, even our families have learned these tactics of hidden agendas to manipulate others to do what they want. This ought not be!
Have you searched out our own motives lately? They are to be clear and without any hidden agendas! Doing so will ensure others will love and trust you!
Let’s Pray:
Daddy God, we live in a world filled with hidden motives and deceptive agendas. Help us to examine our own hearts and ensure that our motives are pure and transparent like Paul's were. Give us the courage to operate with no ulterior motives, no hidden agendas, and nothing to hide. Let our interactions with others be marked by integrity and courtesy, inspiring them to recognize their true value and identity in You. Help us to be people who can be loved and trusted because our motives are clear and our hearts are pure. In Jesus' name, Amen.
