Understanding — “Therefore give to your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your day (1 Kings 3:9-14, NKJV)

We are taught many times that Solomon asked for wisdom. Yes, Daddy God gave him wisdom. But what he really asked for was understanding, which in Greek means the ability to listen, to hear, to discern. This was seen in his first judicial act where two mothers were arguing over which one’s baby had died and which one’s was still alive. They wanted him to determine whose baby was whose! After listening to their story, he knew the true mother would rather give up the baby than see it die.

Wisdom is needed greatly. It’s when we learn to listen and have understanding that wisdom join’s in! Ask Holy Spirit to help you have a listening heart!

Let’s Pray:

Daddy God, we come before You asking for what Solomon requested - not just wisdom, but an understanding heart that can truly listen, hear, and discern. Help us to develop the ability to hear what people are really saying beyond their words, to understand the heart behind the matter, and to discern between good and evil with clarity. Give us listening hearts that can navigate the complexities of life with Your insight. Holy Spirit, teach us to listen with understanding so that true wisdom can flow through us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Today’s Declarations:

I declare that I have an understanding heart that can truly listen, hear, and discern.

I declare that I seek understanding before wisdom, knowing that comprehension leads to right application.

I declare that Holy Spirit helps me hear beyond words to perceive hearts and motives.

I declare that I listen with patience and humility, recognizing there's always more than meets the eye.

I declare that my understanding heart enables me to serve others effectively and make wise decisions.

Be a Blessing,

Sir Gregory
