Anointing — “Now, it is God Himself who has anointed us. And He is constantly strengthening both you and us in union with Christ. He knows we are His since He has also stamped His seal of love over our hearts and has given us Holy Spirit like an engagement ring is given to a bride—a down payment of the blessings to come! (2 Corinthians 1:21-22, The Passion Translation)
What is anointing? By definition, it means “to rub or smear.” This is often done with oil to acknowledge a person’s position or calling — like for a king, prophet, or some other ministry title. For example, Saul was anointed king (1 Samuel 10) then later David was too (1 Samuel 16).
We also will anoint the sick for healing. James tells us to call the elders to anoint with oil those who are sick (James 5:14).
Many people want to receive someone else’s anointing or mantle, typically “special” people like kings, prophets, pastors, or teachers. I’m guilty of this! Daddy God, Jesus and Holy Spirit have already given each of us our own anointing. We are to be who they have called us to be. We ready in 2 Peter 2:9, “But you are God’s chosen treasure —priests who are kings, a spiritual “nation” set apart as God’s devoted ones. He called you out of darkness to experience His marvelous light, and now He claims you as His very own. He did this so that you would broadcast His glorious wonders throughout the world. (TPT)
Body of Christ, it’s time that we begin to recognize who we are and receive the anointing we were set apart for — not someone else’s anointing! We all have our unique place. Let’s thrive in our own place and change the world. Let’s be the Bride Jesus is waiting on us to be!
Let’s Pray:
Daddy God, we thank You that You have anointed each of us with Your Holy Spirit and called us to be priests who are kings in Your Kingdom. Help us to recognize and embrace the unique anointing You have placed on our lives rather than coveting someone else's calling. Strengthen us in our union with Christ and help us to understand that You have stamped Your seal of love over our hearts. Let us thrive in our own unique place in the Body of Christ and change the world through the anointing You've given us. Make us the Bride that Jesus is waiting for us to become. In Jesus' name, Amen.
